Vision Statement:

Our vision is to help the people of the Parish of Longden to enjoy life in a vibrant and inclusive community.

Mission Statement:

We provide accessible and functional space and facilities for both indoor and outdoor sporting, recreational, social, educational, and community-support activities for the people of the Parish of Longden.
The Douglas Swire Memorial Hall, commonly known as Longden Village Hall, was built in 1923 by Jessie and William Swire in memory of their son Douglas Swire and conveyed, together with the surrounding grounds, to the people of the Parish of Longden in 1955.

For almost a hundred years it has served our community well, providing a place where we and our families have come together to socialise, exercise, celebrate and console. It is an essential part of the fabric of our community, enhancing our lives from cradle to grave.

The current custodial and charity trustees are fully committed to ensuring that the Hall goes on serving the community through the next 100 years until 2123 and beyond. However, although our lives and community now are very different from what they were in 1923 the Village Hall is not. It is most definitely looking its age. Whilst we love and want to keep its 1920’s character and features we need to make sure it is fit for purpose now and for the future.

We are, therefore, planning a major refurbishment for its centenary year to provide new toilets and kitchen and an additional meeting room. There will also be a new wheelchair-accessible side entrance to replace the current back entrance and a separate accessible toilet. Our well-loved main hall and stage will remain much as they are now although we will also be looking to improve comfort and functionality throughout.

We need your help

Plans have been drawn up and we have estimated costs of around £320,000 for the project but this will include the structural work required to add an additional function room upstairs at a later date to meet the needs of a growing community.
We have started raising funds and due to some generous pledges and donations together with money we have already saved we have about £162,000 towards our target. This still leaves a long way to go but we have an enthusiastic and talented group of people determined to make it happen.
We will be applying for any grants that may be available but in the current economic climate there is not much about so we are planning lots of fund-raising events and activities that should also provide some welcome, post lock-down social interaction for everyone.

How you can help

Friends of the Village Hall are an informal group who provide practical support to enhance the hall and grounds and help to run social and fund-raising events but do not necessarily want to commit to becoming a committee member. We are looking for people with practical skills and know-how, willing pairs of hands and a few hours to spare occasionally. For more information contact lynbrayne@gmail.com
